Turning Air into Water: Wanda Water’s Innovative Solution to Cyprus’ Water Scarcity

A client of our office, Wanda Water (Cyprus) Ltd seems to have a smart solution to the water scarcity problem in Cyprus and beyond.

Cyprus is facing unprecedented water scarcity due to prolonged drought, increased seasonal demand, and over-reliance on desalination plants, which are costly, prone to breakdown, and often produce water unsuitable for direct consumption.

As highlighted in recent press reports, dam capacity is now below 20% and the Water Development Department is urgently installing four mobile desalination units, delivering drinking water by tanker, and fast-tracking repairs to ageing infrastructure. While essential, these measures are expensive, slow to deploy at scale, and carry operational risks, particularly in remote or semi-mountainous communities.

Wanda Water’s Solution

Wanda Water has chosen Cyprus as the base for its new European headquarters, bringing to the island a breakthrough technologyAtmospheric Water Generation (AWG) units that create mineral-rich drinking water directly from the air.

These compact, low-power systems, with a solar option for off-grid use, deliver safe drinking water without the need for pipelines, desalination, or complex infrastructure. They can be deployed rapidly in locations where water is most urgently needed, complementing existing government efforts while reducing the dependency on costly tanker distribution or desalination output.

Current Availability

288 units arrived in Limassol port today

  • Daily output: Up to 100 litres per unit (humidity-dependent).
  • Total capacity: Up to 28,800 litres of safe drinking water per day – enough to meet the WHO’s recommended 2 litres/day drinking water requirement for more than 14,000 people.

Additional shipments will soon be on their way to Limassol.

Proven in Cyprus

Units are already being tested in Cyprus consistently producing tested safe, mineral-rich water.

Deployment Advantages

  • Highly mobile – can be relocated quickly to where demand is greatest, including emergencies.
  • Flexible configuration – serve individual homes or businesses, or be clustered in a village square to supply an entire community.
  • Rapid start-up – operational within an hour of installation.
  • Resilient & decentralised – no single point of failure as with large plants or centralised distribution.
  • Healthy & safe – naturally mineralised and suitable for immediate consumption. The water has been tested and approved in government-approved laboratories.

Broader interest in the product

Given the worsening crisis, Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) represents an immediate, high-impact solution that can be deployed directly to high-need areas. Wanda is already in discussions with a local municipality on the island of Tinos in Greece, which is interested in purchasing the entire shipment.

Wanda Water welcomes interested parties, including ministries and governmental authorities to get in touch to explore the solution firsthand and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration.
